Take transit to and within Banff National Park for a better experience this summer

Take transit to and within Banff National Park for a better experience this summer

April 26, 2019, Banff, Alberta — This summer, visitors can go almost anywhere in Banff National Park by transit, so plan to leave your vehicle at home and let us do the driving. Together, the Bow Valley Regional Transit Services Commission (BVRSTC) and Parks Canada are excited to announce several 2019 transit initiatives to and within Banff National Park that will make for a better experience. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead for their trip to make the most of their experience.

It all starts with getting to Banff National Park from Calgary. After the continued success of the program in 2018, Calgarians will once again be able to leave their vehicles at home and choose affordable regional transit to the Bow Valley this summer with Southland Transportation’s On-It behind the wheel.

Once it gets rolling, Calgarians will have the choice to stop in Canmore or Banff. Visitors will be invited to take advantage of several new and continuing transit options enabling them to travel quickly and easily. On-It riders can transfer for no charge onto any local Roam transit, including in the communities of Canmore or Banff, where Roam goes to destinations like the Banff Gondola and the Cave & Basin National Historic Site, or to the Lake Minnewanka area.

2019 will see the weekend and holiday Monday service start May 18. This summer, On-It will allow for passengers to bring their bikes, which need to be reserved in advanced, and will introduce a Friday evening trip starting June 28.

There are also new opportunities to take in the views rather than watching the road with Roam’s regional routes for this summer, including the Lake Louise Express, Lake Louise Scenic, and Johnston Canyon routes. The Lake Louise Express is a highway route, while the Lake Louise Scenic and Johnston Canyon routes travel via the Bow Valley Parkway.

“The Commission, along with Parks Canada and our municipal partners the Town of Banff and the Town of Canmore, are pleased to see On-It headed back to the Bow Valley. On-It is an invaluable part of the local transportation system and is instrumental in helping visitors get to the valley without the use of their vehicle,” CAO of BVRTSC Martin Bean says.

“There are many great ways to explore Banff National Park where you don’t have to worry about parking,” says Banff Visitor Experience Manager, Greg Danchuk. “Parks Canada is pleased to continue its partnership with Bow Valley Regional Transit Services Commission to provide a number of transit options to and within Banff National Park including the Calgary to Banff service. This supports Parks Canada’s commitment to preserving our national parks, while providing visitors with the best opportunities for high-quality and meaningful experiences. We encourage visitors to plan ahead and take transit.”
